Get ready for the Graduate ceremony

You should arrive: At IU Natatorium by 1:30 p.m. for pictures and lineup.

What to expect: The ceremony includes the procession of the platform party, the procession and seating of the students, Commencement speakers, the hooding of doctoral graduates, and the conferral of degrees. Most graduates stand and are recognized together by their school deans; their names are not announced individually. The names of doctoral graduates will be announced. Read about doctoral hooding.

Know before you go:

  • Graduate arrival time, location: 1:30 p.m., Natatorium Gym. All graduates MUST enter through the Sports Complex Garage.
  • Graduate parking: Sports Complex and Riverwalk Garages. Must enter the Natatorium through the Sports Complex Garage.
  • Drop off is on New York Street, just east of University Blvd., beneath the pedestrian skywalk connecting the Natatorium and Education building.
  • Graduate accessible drop off: Tent at the northeast corner of University Blvd. and New York Street. 
  • There are several road construction projects in and around downtown Indianapolis, so please plan your driving route in advance to avoid possible delays.

You can order formal announcements through Herff Jones to share with all of your family and friends.

Have loved ones who won’t be able to make the trip in person? Let them know that they can visit this site on Commencement Day and celebrate with you virtually.

After the ceremony

After the ceremony, you must return your graduation apparel to Herff Jones using the prepaid label provided. You can also reuse the shipping box. Failure to return apparel may result in a fine!

Do not bring

Alcoholic beverages, fireworks, balloons, and signs are not allowed at Commencement. Please respect your fellow graduates and refrain from bringing these items.

Event organizers and venues will not be responsible for lost items.
